An Octopus's Summerhouse
A cheerful octopus sits in his summerhouse above the waves, eating sandwiches and quaffing red wine. This image was originally inspired by the Beatles' Octopus's Garden, but I always thought I would rather not be 'in the shade', being a sun-lover, so I moved him up into this summerhouse. There's a long history to this picture. I painted the original version of it in about 1983, and gave it as a present to a flatmate who said he liked it. He then moved out to live with his new girlfriend. A few months later I went to visit them and found my painting screwed up on the floor in the corridor outside the toilet. I felt so sad, and in those days was not very assertive, so I didn't say a thing, and never put brush to paper again for about fifteen years. Having regained my confidence thanks to my wonderful supportive husband John, I decided to recreate that lost piece of artwork from the past, and here it is, much the same as it was back in 1983.
