The monkeys are fascinated by the girl's book. What is it? Why is she looking at it so intently? It's not food, it does not appear to be alive, so why is she so interested in it? They leap down out of the red and gold canopy of the Japanese maple tree for a closer look. The girl scarcely notices them. She sits serenely, almost as if meditating, absorbed in her book. Her faithful dog is alert though, watching the monkeys with suspicion. He will not allow those monkeys to snatch the book that fascinates them so much.
