These are bird people: magic birds with human heads. They are little green bee-eaters who swoop through the skies of Upper Egypt like green swallows with wings that flash copper-coloured in the sun, while their heads are the heads seen in Ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. They fly over the banks of the Nile and through the gardens of Luxor, and beneath them ancient Pharaohs sleep.
