Sue Burgess: CV
1995 - 1997
Programmer/Analyst at the Clinical Trials Service Unit, Oxford
- Main duties:
Computing development work in the Clinical Trials Service Unit of the Department of Clinical Medicine of Oxford University. The computing environment was OpenVMS on the Alpha, with Ingres gradually replacing indexed datafiles accessed by Fortran programs. My work in the unit included:
- Basic Ingres DBA functions
- Maintenance and further development of the existing Ingres databases holding overviews of treatments of various diseases
- Conversion of Fortran programs into Ingres
- Writing screens to enable those clinical trials which still used Fortran to produce output files for loading into Microsoft Word, so the data could be used in mail-merges.
- Salary: Approx. £22,000
- Reason for leaving: I was offered an extension of my fixed-term, two-year contract, but had decided that perhaps cancer research was not for me. Additionally, Ingres was a sought-after skill at the time, and this meant it was easy to get a job developing GUI client/server screens, keeping my skills up to date.
